About Access
Access - not an easy word. In working in these difficult contexts, we really try to reach children who are living under the most difficult and fragile realities. Those that are more difficult to access.
This community is called "Jerusalem". It is one of the poorest neighborhoods in the Capão Redondo favela. There is no public sanitation, no water supply, no reliable housing structure other than wooden beams, cardboard and any other material found to build a residential structure. There are no bathrooms - the marginal river is used mainly as such.
90% of the children that Access serves are from this community. When we talk about “Access”, we really want to direct them, reach out to those who need it most, in the most desperate and neglected conditions of life. That's why Access was designed. The task is always challenging.
Many of these children are highly abused and constantly exposed to violence. Not everyone attends public education - which in many cases, if not most, is very poor. Most do not like going to school, are afraid or simply have no purpose. Dropout rates are very high.
Access SP was created to change that reality. To educate. To work with these children and create a sense of purpose, of citizenship, to inspire them to pursue their dreams. We try to work with them to recreate passionate educational paths. A feeling of love for learning. Access is trying to build an innovative and restructured teaching method, aimed at each child, working with each of their strengths and interests. We want to provide education through the technology of powerful tools.
Every day, Access educators and volunteers go inside their homes to take them to the project. Considering the logistics and the difficulty of access to the communities, this effort must be made. It is a very difficult and time-consuming routine. The work is delicate and sometimes problematic, as parents are not always ready to allow them to participate in the Access ‘Project. Children beg to go. They are loving being part of something they never dreamed of.
Now, we take them from their homes to the project, it's a 1km walk. Access hopes to be able to purchase a van soon that can better accommodate this daily commute and take them safely to the Access Innovative Learning Center.
